Summer 2004 Garden My summer 2004 garden includes: zucchini, melon, tomato (2 plants) green pepper, radishes, lettuce, and some sad looking carrots. Pumpkin
I planted the pumpkin seeds in July of 2003, the pumpkin sprouted in August. I put the pumpkin on plastic to keep it from the damp ground, and the wire was for hungry animals and small children to keep out. These protective measures didn't work, someone pulled away the wire and pulled the pumpkin off the vine before it was fully ripe. Therefore the pumpkin served as a decoration only and not as pie or cake...I'll try again next year! As you can see, once the pumpkin starts to grow the leaves and other flowers often shrivel up and die. This is to give all the possible moisture to the growing pumpkin. This was easy to plant, sprouted quickly, and grew very fast. I simply had to remember to water it at least every day. I would recommend it to those who have larger gardens, though- the 6 foot long vine grew right into the woods behind our house! Carrots I planted carrots in July 2003 as well. While I got a nice batch, I did several things wrong. First of all, the soil in my garden was far too rocky and shallow for carrots to grow. Secondly, I didn't thin them as much as I was supposed to- they were literally growing on top of each other. They were still quite tasty, though!
