Knitting Archive: 2004-2002

November 14th:, 2004

I actually finished this sweater in July at a family reunion- but I messed up on of the sleeves.  Annoyed and tired of the project, I tossed it aside and didn't pick it up again until last sweet.   I ripped the sleeve and redid it, feeling rather stupid that I put off doing something so simple that took so little time.

The sweater is 'Bare that Belly' from 'The Girl's Guide to Simple Knits.'  Obviously, I chose to NOT bear my belly and made it much longer.  I also added a crochet flower.  The yarn is Lion Brand Landscapes in 'meadow.'  The colors are a bit brighter in person than you see here.  I'm not crazy about this yarn, it already looks sort of raggedy to me.  I also gain about 10 lbs when I put it on.  I can see this becoming a snow shoveling or winter dog walking sort of sweater.

Yeah, I'm a fan of green.  Noro Multi Directional Scarf.  Took this apart maybe 4 or 5 times (see screwed up triangle picture below) but I really love it now.

Silk bag made from handspun recycled silk sari ends.

July 2: First knit sweater for myself that turned out decent.  Jessica Fenlon Thomas's 'Cherry Twist' from knitty.  Mines more a blue raspberry twist.  I made it with turquoise Waterspun and baby blue mohair.  The color combination turned out really cool.

And with the leftover Waterspun weekend:

Adapted from the summer, 2004 Interweave Knits magazine pattern- 'Snuggly baby hats.'  It looks like an onion with earflaps.

June 29th:     First knit sox and a bear.

Sweaters & a Shawl

The shawl is made of variegated merino wool- it's very soft and cozy.  Shawls are great practice for decreasing.  The first sweater top you see was my first go at lopi knitting- it's made from Lion Brand Thick & Quick and lavender lopi wool.  The doll's sweater is made from the same yarn.  Stocking stitch with k1, p2 ribbing on the edges of the sleeves and waist.

I have named the last sweater the Blue Monstrosity.  It's terrible.  I had not been knitting long when I decided to have a go at making a full sized sweater.  I knitted this while chatting with relatives at Christmas in 2001.  I got one piece done a day...yes, things go pretty fast when you knit two strands of Thick & Quick at once.  The Monstrosity weights about 10 lbs.  Check out the  leg-o-mutant disease on the sleeves- I'm not sure my elbow needs quite that much room. I didn't use a pattern, can you tell?   I really need to pick this apart and remake it, there's tons of nice yarn in there.

Scarves

I knitted this Harry Potter scarf in January 2002.  Of course I knitted it in stockinet and of course it's a big rolled up 'snake' now.  I got the pattern at a now defunct site, but it was based closely on the scarves of the movie.

Scarf project.  This is my very favorite color-very pale lime green (shows up too soft in the photos.)  I am knitting it in my favorite stitch- k1,p1, on size 17 needles.  The wool is two ply Rowan merino wool.  Finished February 28, 2004, and here is a matching hat pattern to go with it.

Hats

I make a lot of hats.  My favorite are baby hats- they go so quickly (and are nice and warm) when you double up two strands of baby cotton.  All are crocheted, the last hat was knit on circular needles.  The first hat was my first crochet project ever- I was copying a black and white design at www.girlshop.com.

Mary Frances

I made this purse and flower basket from 'The Mary Frances Knitting and Crochet Book,' circa 1918.
